We also remember those who have lost their lives to this terrible disease and those who continue to suffer. HIV /AIDS is a global challenge. The pandemic of HIV /AIDS can be defeated. In Saint John, we stand united with the international community in combating this virus. We also recognize the essential role that community- based organizations play in providing support and compassion to those living with the disease. By working together, we can give hope and comfort. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Ivan Court, do hereby proclaim December 1, 2011, in the City of Saint John, as World AIDS Day. On this day and throughout the year, the red ribbon helps raise awareness of the importance of fighting HIV /AIDS. I urge others to join me in activities to remember those who have lost their lives to AIDS and to provide support and comfort to those living with this disease. In 2010, this figure jumped to just over 4,000, partly due to the City's designation as a Cultural Capital of Canada; the City's 225th anniversary; and the establishment of new arts organizations and initiatives.
