Totten, City Manager; J. Nugent, City Solicitor; G. Yeomans, Commissioner of Finance and Treasurer; J. Baird, Commissioner of Planning and Development; P. Groody, Commissioner of Municipal Operations; P. Woods, Deputy City Manager and Common Clerk, and E. Gormley, Assistant Common Clerk 1. Meeting Called To Order The Mayor called the Committee of the Whole meeting to order. 1.1 Funding the Pension Plan 1.1(a) Presentation by Management/Professional/Non-union Staff Referring to a submitted electronic slide presentation, Mr. Groody outlined the Management/Professional/Non-union preferred alternative to the City Managers report tabled with Council on October 10, 2006. Referring to a submitted letter to Council, Bob Hickes, Regional Director of the CUPE Maritime Region representing the four civic unions, Local 18, Local 61, Local 486 and IAFF Local 771. Mr. Hickes advised Council that the locals are willing to negotiate with the City to find a solution for the pension deficit. Referring to a submitted letter to Council, Claude McKinnon, President of the Retirees Association, spoke on behalf of the City of Saint John retirees advising Council that the retirees do not want any changes to their pension, and that they support the City’s efforts to put the pension plan on strong financial footing and are willing to be part of discussions to this end. October 16, 2006 197-2006 On motion of Councillor Titus Seconded by Councillor Farren RESOLVED that the City Manager be directed to make it a priority to have discussions with senior staff and the various groups regarding all relevant issues associated with proposed solutions to resolve the pension plan deficit, including costings, and report to Council as soon as possible. Question being taken, the motion was carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m. Common Clerk
