Signs on Poles By-law
BY-LAW NUMBER M-25
A LAW PROHIBITING THE PLACING OF
SIGNS ON POLES IN
THE CITY OF SAINT JOHN
Be it enacted by the Common Council of
The City of Saint John as follows:-
1 A person, who hangs, erects or fastens,
exhibits, maintains, places or keeps up, or causes or
permits to be erected, exhibited or fastened,
maintained, placed, or kept up, any swinging-sign,
sign-board, sign, show-board, show-card,
pamphlet, bill, bulletin, hand bill or other thing of
any description whatsoever, upon any telegraph,
telephone or electric light pole or standard in The
City of Saint John without first having obtained the
written permission of the person who or which
owns and maintains such telegraph, telephone or
electric light pole or standard commits an offence
and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of
$200.00.
2 It shall be prima facie evidence that the
person, whose name or title is designated on any
swinging-sign, sign-board, sign, show-board, show-
card, pamphlet, bill, bulletin, hand-bill or other
thing of any description whatsoever is responsible
for the hanging, erecting or fastening, exhibiting,
maintaining, placing or keeping up of such upon
any telegraph, telephone or electric light pole or
standard and has committed a violation of this by-
law.
3 It is hereby declared that the passage of this
By-law is urgent for the immediate preservation of
the public health, public safety and public peace,
and the same shall go into effect and operation on
the twenty-eighth day of October in the year of our
Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-four.

1 Commet une infraction et est passible, sur
declaration de culpabilite par procedure sommaire,
d'une amende de deux cents dollars la personne qui
accroche, installe ou attache, expose, entretient,
pose ou maintient, ou qui demande ou permet que
soit accroche, expose ou attache, entretenu, pose ou
maintenu une ens eigne pendante, un panonceau, un
panneau, un panneau-reclame de spectacle, une
pancarte, une brochure, une affiche, un
communique, une circulaire ou toute autre chose de
quelque nature qu' elle soit sur un poteau ou un
pylone de telegraphe, de telephone ou d'electricite
dans The City of Saint John sans avoir obtenu au
prealable la permission ecrite soit de la personne
qui est proprietaire de ce poteau ou de ce pylOne,
soit de celle qui en assure l'entretien.
2 Vaut preuve prima facie du fait qu'une
personne est responsable de son accrochage, de son
installation, de son attache, de son exposition, de
son entretien, de sa pose ou de son maintien sur un
poteau ou un pylOne de telegraphe, de telephone ou
d'electricite et qu'elle a enfreint Ie present arrete Ie
fait que son nom ou son titre est indique sur une
ens eigne pendante, un panonceau, un panneau, un
panneau reclame de spectacle, une pancarte, une
brochure, une affiche, un communique, une
circulaire ou toute autre chose de quelque nature
qu'elle soit.
3 II est declare que I' adoption du present
arrete est urgente aux fins de preserver
immediatement la sante, la securite et la paix
publiques, et l'arrete produira son entier effet a
compter du 28 octobre 1954.
