McCloskey, the City Manager and Senior Staff accompanied by piper M. Wilson, led the procession of Mayor and Council -elect into Council Chamber. NATIONAL ANTHEM E. Cormier led in singing the National Anthem. OATHS OF OFFICE Having received the results of the Return After Poll, certified by the Municipal Returning Officer following the May 9th Municipal Election, the Common Clerk J. Taylor administered the Oath of Office to the Mayor -elect and Councillors -elect as follows: Mayor: William Donald Brady Darling Councillors: Ward 1- Greg Norton Ward 2 - Sean Casey Ward 3 - Donna Reardon Ward 4 - Ray Strowbridge At Large - Gary Sullivan At Large - Shirley A. MacKenzie Ward 1- Blake Armstrong MEETING CALLED TO ORDER His Worship, Mayor Darling, called the first Meeting of the newly elected Council to Order at 7:30 p.m. ELECTION OF DEPUTY MAYOR On motion of Councillor Sullivan, seconded by Councillor Strowbridge: RESOLVED that Councillor Shirley McAlary be elected as Deputy Mayor for the term of office of the Council. COMMON COUNCIL/CONSEIL COMMUNAL May 24, 2016/le 24 mai 2016 1LTA100 00114L1:k]k]11191 CITY MANAGER OPENING REMARKS The City Manager welcomed Premier Brian Gallant, MP Wayne Long, MLA Ed Doherty, the families of the new council, and all in attendance. The outgoing council and their efforts were acknowledged. The opening remarks reflected on the rich history of the City and the optimism for future growth. The City Staff is positioned to assist and look forward to working with the Mayor and Council. ADDRESS OF MAYOR The Mayor welcomed the Hon. Premier B. Gallant, MP W. Long, MLA E. Doherty and all the special guests. His family and all his supporters were thanked for their work during the election campaign. The work to Grow SJ during the next four years is now underway. REMARKS BY DEPUTY MAYOR The Deputy Mayor extended her appreciation to the Hon. Premier Gallant, MP W. Long and MLA E. Doherty for their appearance. Her election -team many of whom have worked on her campaigns since the 1990s, were thanked for their efforts. The work of senior staff was recognized and commended. The respect among Councillors which is now entrenched will enable better discussion and decision making at Council meetings throughout the term. REMARKS BY COUNCILLORS All Councillors thanked the Premier, MP Long and MLA Doherty for showing their support by attending the Swearing -In ceremony. All thanked their families, campaign workers and the citizens of Saint John. Their ideas for respectful teamwork to foster economic development for the great City of Saint John were reiterated. ADJOURNMENT Moved by Councillor Reardon, seconded by Deputy Mayor McAlary: RESOLVED that the meeting of Common Council held on Tuesday May 24th, 2016 be adjourned. MOTION CARRIED. COMMON COUNCIL/CONSEIL COMMUNAL May 24, 2016/le 24 mai 2016 MOTION ADOPTEE MOT D'OUVERTURE DU DIRECTEUR GENERAL Le directeur general souhaite la bienvenue a I'honorable Brian Gallant, premier ministre, a Wayne Long, depute, a Ed Doherty, membre de I'Assemblee legislative, aux families du nouveau conseil, et a tous les participants. 11 salue Ie conseil sortant et ses efforts. Le mot d'ouverture porte sur la riche histoire de la Ville et l'optimisme pour la croissance future. Le personnel de la Ville est en poste pour apporter son soutien et nous avons hate de travailler avec Ie maire et Ie conseil. DISCOURS DU MAIRE Le maire souhaite la bienvenue a I'honorable B. Le travail pour le developpement de Saint John pendant les quatre prochaines annees est desormais en cours. COMMENTAIRES FORMULES PAR LA MAIRESSE SUPPLEANTE La mairesse suppleante exprime sa reconnaissance a I'honorable B. Gallant, premier ministre, a W. Long, depute et a E. Doherty, membre de I'Assemblee legislative pour leur presence. Elle remercie son equipe electorale dont un bon nombre ont travaille dans plusieurs campagnes depuis les annees 1990 pour leurs efforts. Elle reconnait le travail des membres du personnel cadre superieur et les remercie pour leurs efforts. Le respect parmi les conseillers, qui desormais est bien etabli, favorisera de meilleures discussions et de meilleures prises de decisions au cours des reunions du conseil tout au long de la duree du mandat. Doherty, membre de I'Assemblee legislative de manifester leur appui en assistant a la ceremonie d'assermentation. IIs remercient tous leurs familles, les personnes qui ont travaille au sein de la compagne electorale et les citoyens de Saint John. IIs reiterent leur intention de travailler en equipe de maniere respectueuse pour favoriser le developpement economique de la belle Ville de Saint John.
